چکیده

Characteristic signatures are often observed in HF radar range-time-intensity plots when travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) are present. These signatures, in particular the variation of the F-region skip distance, have been synthesised using a ray tracing model. The magnitude of the skip variation is found to be a function of the peak electron density perturbation associated with the TID and radar frequency. Examination of experimental observations leads to an estimate of the peak electron density perturbation amplitude of around 25% for those TIDs observed by the CUTLASS radar system. The advantage of using the skip variation over the radar return amplitude as an indicator of density perturbation is also discussed. An example of a dual radar frequency experiment has been given. The investigation of the e€ect of radar frequency on the observations will aid the optimisation of future experiments.

Solar wind Alfvén waves: a source of pulsed ionospheric convection and atmospheric gravity waves

A case study of medium-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) that are correlated with solar wind Alfvén waves is presented. The HF radar groundscatter signatures of TIDs caused by atmospheric gravity waves with periods of 20–40 min are traced to a source at high latitudes, namely pulsed ionospheric flows (PIFs) due to bursts in the convection electric field and/or the associated iono...

Detection and Modeling of Medium-Scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances in Iran Region

Ionosphere layer variations are divided into regular and irregular. Regular changes can be considered as daily changes, changes depending on latitude and changes due to solar activity. Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances (TID) is one of the irregular changes of ionosphere which categorized in small, medium and large scales. Medium-scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbance (MSTID) which are propa...

Validation of the CUTLASS HF radar gravity wave observing capability using EISCAT CP-1 data

Quasi-periodic ̄uctuations in the returned ground-scatter power from the SuperDARN HF radars have been linked to the passage of medium-scale gravity waves. We have applied a technique that extracts the ®rst radar range returns from the F-region to study the spatial extent and characteristics of these waves in the CUTLASS ®eld-of-view. Some ray tracing was carried out to test the applicability o...

Generation of Artificial Acoustic-Gravity Waves and Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances in HF Heating Experiments

We report the results of our ionospheric HF heating experiments to generate artificial acoustic-gravitywaves (AGW) and traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID),whichwere conducted at theHigh-frequencyActiveAuroral Research Program facility inGakona, Alaska. Based on the data from UHF radar, GPS total electron content, and ionosonde measurements, we found that artificialAGW/TID can be generated ...

A dominant acoustic-gravity mode in the polar thermosphere

The article presents a summary of the main findings of the systematic study of acoustic-gravity waves (AGWs) in the polar thermosphere. This study was based on the in situ measurements made by the Dynamics Explorer 2 (DE2) spacecraft late in its mission when it descended low enough (250–400 km). It was found out that AGWs in the polar thermosphere are observed within a narrow frequency band clo...
